Reading at Home: Each night Monday-Thursday your child will be bringing home a book of his/her choice from our classroom library. Enjoy this time listening to and reading with your child! Please be sure that books are returned to school each day safely in your child's book pouch and that you've initialed the reading log.

In 2nd Grade we engage in a literacy model called Reader's Workshop! Students are participating in a brief mini lesson daily and then will practice the skills from the mini lessons in a variety of ways including independent reading, partner reading, book clubs, guided reading groups, strategy groups, independent conferences, sharing and more! There is a great amount of freedom in choosing high interest, just right books and much time is devoted to building reading fluency and stamina.
In Writer's workshops students have been working on nonfiction expert books. They have included important text features such as a table of contents, headings and a glossary to help readers better understand the information they have written. We are working together on a biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. that incorporates all we have learned about nonfiction writing as well as important information about MLK that we are learning in Social Studies.
